Since 2019, the alliance of the city of Mittweida,

Since 2019, the alliance of the city of Mittweida, the university and Volksbank Mittweida has been working together to turn Mittweida into a blockchain showcase region as part of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funding programme "WIR! - Wandel durch Innovation in der Region".

Now the alliance has successfully mastered the interim evaluation. The progress to date, further planning and the prospects for sustainable value creation in the region were evaluated.

As a result, the BMBF is providing the alliance with a project budget of a further 7 million euros, which can now be underpinned by individual blockchain research projects in the coming years.

The jury confirmed in its overall assessment: "The Alliance operates at the cutting edge of research in a forward-looking field of innovation with international exploitation potential."

Mayor Ralf Schreiber, as the consortium leader of the alliance, expressed his delight and thanked all those involved for their commitment: "The decision is a great success for Mittweida. We have shown that we are at the forefront of blockchain throughout Germany. Through the WIR! programme has already created around 30 highly qualified jobs in the region, there are currently 12 blockchain application projects underway and the first companies have been founded."

The funding will now be used to implement further innovative blockchain projects and to increasingly bring users from regional companies and the population on board. Especially for digitally savvy young professionals, Mittweida offers optimal educational and entry-level opportunities in this challenging field.

Every day there are new reports about the use of the innovative technology, and even the coalition agreements of Germany and Saxony address the topic of blockchain. The Chinese government is particularly active in implementing the technology, as the official announcement by the Chinese Cyberspace Administration (CAC) on 30 January shows. Under the auspices of the CAC, entire regions are to implement blockchain pilot projects in the future, in addition to various companies in China. The CAC announced that the integration of blockchain technology solutions will be promoted in 15 model regions and 164 institutions, including hospitals, companies and universities.
The goal of the initiative is the widespread adoption of blockchain technologies in practically all government organisations and commercial enterprises. The Cyberspace Administration has officially announced that the new technology will enable large-scale cross-cutting data exchange. The interaction between the departments and regions involved will help streamline business processes, improve collaboration, reduce costs and create a reliable system.
All of this should be done on a broad scale across multiple sectors and industries to create a holistic blockchain ecosystem. The model regions include Beijing and Shanghai, as well as the southern Chinese metropolitan regions of Guangzhou and Chengdu, among others. The 164 companies include SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, Beijing Gas Group and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, among others.

Key areas of blockchain development currently include manufacturing, government data and service exchange, taxation, law enforcement, criminal procedure, inspection, copyright, civil affairs, human society, education, trade finance, energy, healthcare, risk management, stock market and cross-border financing.
